Welcome to Mars

Description

Our neighbour, Mars, is often called the Red Planet – it’s not hard to see why, but do you know what gives it its red colour? It’s iron oxide (in other words, rust!). Mars has the largest dust storms of all the planets in our solar system and it is home to the tallest mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons.

As we look forward to the future of space exploration, we look to the missions to explore Mars. NASA has sent four rovers to Mars to find out more about our neighbour.

Do you know their names? The European Space Agency has also developed the ExoMars programme, due to launch in 2022, which will include their own Rosalind Franklin rover to search for signs of past life on the Red Planet.

Do you think there will be life on Mars one day?

Distance: Mars is 227.9 million km away from the sun!
